Why This Month Matters to Me

Jamaica has shaped everything about who I am. I was born there. My earliest memories, my sense of identity, the way I see beauty, strength and community all come from that island. Even now, living in the UK and building Nylah’s, Jamaica is always with me. I still have family across the island, and like so many in the diaspora, my roots tie me back home no matter where life takes me.

When Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica, itdidn’t just damage buildings, roads and coastlines. It shook communities thatraised me. It affected the everyday lives of people I love. I spent dayschecking in with family, glued to updates, feeling that mix of anxiety andhelplessness anyone with loved ones abroad understands.

What always stands out with Jamaica is our resilience. We are a small island with a larger-than-life spirit. Even in the worst moments, you will see neighbours sharing food, holding each other through loss, clearing roads together and rebuilding together. That spirit reminds me of my own upbringing and the values that guide Nylah’s today, especially around
community, care and supporting one another in times of need.

This December, we’re giving our customers the opportunity to stand with Jamaica too. With every purchase on Nylah’s, you can donate £1 or £2 to the Jamaican Relief Fund. Our goal is to raise at least £2,000 to support families and communities rebuilding their homes and lives.

For me, this isn’t just a charitable
initiative. It’s personal. Jamaica is where my story began. It’s where many of
my formative memories were made. It’s where my family still lives. Supporting
Jamaica in this moment feels like supporting the part of me that made Nylah’s possible.

How the donations will help

We’ve chosen the Jamaican Relief Fund because the money goes directly towards essential recovery efforts including:

  • Rebuilding homes and restoring local infrastructure
  • Supporting families who have lost belongings or income
  • Providing supplies, food and medical support to affected communities
  • Strengthening long-term climate resilience across the island
