How To Moisturise And Hydrate Afro Hair

Make your kinks and coils glow

With the new year in full swing, many of you will hopefully be sticking to your resolution to give your natural crown a bit more TLC.  In case you have already lapsed a little, fret no more, we are here to help.  For the seasoned naturalista or the sister on a new natural hair journey, here are a few tips and tricks to moisturise and hydrate afro hair.

Hydration is key for naturally curly and afro hair

Hopefully you have already dispelled that myth that we should not wash our afro hair often.  You should aim to wash your hair every 1 – 2 weeks, this provides your luscious locks with the essential hydration that it needs.  Nylah’s newly formulated strength and shine shampoo does just the job of delicately cleansing your hair without stripping it of its moisture.  Water is key, and you should also keep a spray bottle with part oil, part water handy to hydrate and detangle your hair when in its dry state.

Using a water based moisturiser

Moisturise like a boss

Using a moisturiser that has water as a main component is great for your afro kinky hair.  Look no further than our moisture retention leave in which improves hair moisture content.  We also recommend sealing in the moisture in your hair with an oil such as the Nylah super seed oil, or even shea butter or castor oil.

Other helpful tips to keep afro and textured hair moisturised

  1. A regular deep condition should be your best friend.  Using a good conditioner such as our super botanicals restorative conditioner restores and protects your hair’s natural moisture barrier.
  2. try to avoid the temptation of using too much heat on your hair.  It goes without saying that excessive heat dries out your afro hair and can cause damage.
  3. Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillow case.  This material keeps the moisture in your hair better than traditional cotton products.
